Meet the Owner - Windmill Point Alpacas

Meet Nicole Robbins, owner of Windmill Point Alpacas

How long have you owned your business?

2 years

What was the inspiration to start your business?

There are two reasons really.

First: I've always wanted to have a small town wool store!

Second: I'm a fibre artist! I've mostly worked in acrylic wool because I couldn't wear sheep's wool. In order to have a wool shop, I needed to source out various wool. I didn't want to sell sheep's wool as I couldn't use it to knit with myself so I needed to source out other natural fibres. This is where I discovered Alpacas (I had never even seen an alpaca before) and found out about the benefits of alpaca fibre.

So began my research on how to care for alpacas, buy property, and build our farm from scratch. Besides, wouldn't it be cool to sell alpaca fibre in my store - and guess what - the alpaca where that fibre came from is in the pasture!

What is your favourite part of being a small business owner?

It's hard to pick one thing. One of my favourite parts of owning a business is the farm tours where I get to educate customers, especially the children, about Alpacas. Seeing their reactions when they find out something new is one of my favourite parts.

What do you wish people knew about your business?

I wish people knew that, despite popular belief, alpacas do not spit. They reserve their spitting for other alpacas!

Who is your greatest supporter?

My greatest supporter is my husband and family.

What are you most proud of about your business?

What I'm most proud of is community support.

Describe yourself or your business in one or two words?

We are a family friendly farm offering alpaca experiences!
