Meet the Owner - Rude Awakening Granola
Q&A with Connie Powers
How long have you owned your business?
I started my business in 2018. I was still working as a teacher full time but had my eye on retiring and starting a new path.
What was the inspiration to start your business?
I wish I had a definitive answer for that but I don’t. It just happened. One day I brought some of my granola to a friend at school (work), she loved it and I decided to market it. It just went from there. The name of my business came from my daughter as a teenager. She once told me that every morning was a Rude Awakening. Since I make breakfast products, the name stuck.
What is your favourite part of being a small business owner?
I just like owning a business and being in that arena with other entrepreneurs. I like the freedom of knowing that I can forge ahead and be creative or I can slack a bit and the only person to answer to is myself.
What do you wish people knew about your business?
I would like everyone to know that my granola business gave me the springboard to become a digital content creator as a live stream cooking host. RudeAwakeningTv is the offshoot of RudeAwakening Granola. It airs every Sunday on the Twitch streaming platform.
Who is your greatest supporter?
My two daughters support me wholeheartedly with technical assistance, social media assistance and business advice. They hear me out and give me their opinions or expertise since they are both professionals in the Arts. Liz and Monique are my partners in this path.
What are you most proud of about your business?
I am most proud of the reputation I have as an honest, inclusive and community-minded business owner. I am proud to support the LGBTQIA community through specific sales campaigns and to be known as a safe space at all my markets.
Describe yourself or your business in one or two words?
Fun.
